The United States Congress ratified a long-debated free trade agreement with Colombia, five years after it was signed by President George W. Bush. The agreement was supported by the Obama administration, which was pressured by US-based human rights and labor groups to insist the Colombian government provide more workers' rights protections. While this agreement is a step to improve labor rights in Colombia - one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a trade union member, rights advocates and Colombian workers fear that there will be little change on the ground. There will need to be more progress in Columbia during the implementation phase of the trade pact.
